About the Event
Paint the Peninsula is a plein air art competition and exhibition held on the Olympic Peninsula in partnership with the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center. Artists paint outdoors at iconic locations, and their works are exhibited and sold at PAFAC. The event has also featured a Plein Air Wine label.

Plein air painting captures the raw beauty of a landscape in real time, challenging artists to translate shifting light and atmosphere onto canvas before the moment passes. On the Olympic Peninsula, this tradition takes on special meaning, as the region's dramatic coastline, misty forests, and mountain vistas provide an ever-changing palette of color and shadow. Participants in this annual competition find themselves immersed in a creative process that demands both technical skill and spontaneous intuition. The resulting works offer viewers a fresh perspective on familiar scenery, each painting a unique record of a particular hour and weather, preserving a fleeting glimpse of the natural world.
The connection between art and community grows stronger each year as local businesses, volunteers, and patrons rally around this celebration of creativity. Beyond the competition itself, the event fosters a vibrant cultural exchange where visiting artists share techniques and stories with residents and fellow painters. Workshops and public demonstrations invite onlookers to witness the artistic process firsthand, demystifying the craft and inspiring the next generation of creators. This collaborative spirit transforms the peninsula into a living gallery, where every brushstroke contributes to a collective appreciation for the region's extraordinary light and landscape.
Support from dedicated donors and sponsors ensures that this gathering of artists remains accessible and sustainable for years to come. Careful planning and responsible stewardship of resources allow organizers to maintain a robust program despite the challenges of a tight budget. Every contribution, whether large or small, helps cover essential expenses and keeps the event on solid footing for the future. The continued generosity of the community reflects a shared belief in the power of art to enrich lives, connect people to place, and celebrate the enduring beauty of the Olympic Peninsula.
